Delivering Expectations

 

They know a thing or two about delivering the goods at Birchall Foodservice. Just ask any of the 1,400 customers across the north of England they supply on a daily basis.

 

Efficiency is critical and management are unswerving in the firm’s commitment to service and standards.

 

In turn, they admit to being equally expectant of their suppliers.

 

So, when it came to finding adequate security for their new purpose-built premises – a multi-temperature food storage and distribution centre at Burnley Bridge – only the best would do.

 

The task of installing ‘the full gambit’ of security measures at Cobalt House, including access control, full barrier entry and exit and the very latest in high definition CCTV, was handed to Alert.

 

And operations manager Paul Jackson could not be happier with the outcome: “We knew we would be a demanding customer, given the level of security we wanted, but Alert have really delivered,” said Paul.

 

“They understood from day one – our initial meeting with Gavin Pennington – immediately grasping what we were looking to achieve. They have stayed professional throughout, patient too, for we have tweaked the specification as we have gone along!”

 

Birchall Foodservice Ltd is a proud family firm with a history dating back to the early 1900s when George Chichester Birchall ran a ‘selling out’ shop on Able Street in Burnley. George’s son Edgar developed the business into wholesale, employing around 10 staff, before he was called up for war service in 1939.

 

Birchall continued to grow apace with control eventually passing to Edgar’s son, Colin, the current managing director. These days the management lies in the hands of Colin’s son, Justin and Justin’s wife, Louise, along with fellow director Keith Horner.

 

With more than 100 employees, it stands proudly as one of East Lancashire’s true success stories. To underline their ambition, the new Cobalt House premises house a training and exhibition centre and a demonstration kitchen.

 

The firm deals with independent caterers from Birimingham to the Borders; from one-man bands to hotel groups, schools to nursing homes.

 

Understandably the demands on stock are significant, hence the need for the tightest security.

 

Cannot afford to take chances

 

“We cannot afford to take any chances,” added Paul. “The premises must be totally secure 24/7, both internally and externally. We had to find the right supplier and in Alert we feel we have.

 

“We have a policy to try to use local firms wherever and whenever possible, but we did interview several interested parties before making our decision. Strong recommendations also fell heavily in favour of Alert, but it was their attention to detail that really convinced us.”
